A simple guide to conquering that dreaded laundry once and for all.
Have you ever had the feeling that your laundry is just NEVER EVER done? I think that every family has felt that overwhelming and daunting feeling that the pile of laundry can give you. It’s just so frustrating! I remember when my mother started me doing my own laundry as one of my chores while I was a teenager. (See my blog post; The Ultimate Chore Guide For Toddlers To Teens Here ). It wasn’t that bad of a job. It was just my clothes that I was in charge of doing and honestly, it did not take that long. What was the big deal right? Well, there was that one time that I forgot to take my clothes out of the washer for a week…well let’s just say the mold spots didn’t come out and my mother was less than pleased with me.
Fast Forward to Motherhood. All of a sudden this laundry thing exploded!!! Where did this all come from!?! When I got married, sure, makes sense, laundry doubles. My clothes, his clothes. But when baby number one comes around, oh my goodness gracious! It was like I was washing laundry for an entire army! The amount of times this cute little bundle of joy needed a wardrobe change in just a 24-hour period! Not only that but sometimes those wardrobe changes included a full bedding change, or even worse our bedding would also need an extra change. How can these tiny little babies create such a huge mess every single day? How on earth did people do this before the invention of the washing machine…I shudder just even thinking about that!
The Pile of Laundry That Never Seems To Go Away
If your family is anything like my family, then you have probably been swimming in laundry just like us at times. But once I figured out how to tackle this once and for all I am so glad to say that those dreaded piles of laundry that never seem to go away are now gone. I have developed a simple way to tackle the chore that everyone dreads. Leaving more time for my family, and enjoying life without being stuck under a never ending pile.
This simple trick to tackle your laundry will work well for any family, no matter how big. And if you are like most American families today where both Mom and Dad have to work in order to even afford your own washing machine, let alone all those items for baby that need washing all the time, then this tick will work for you. If you are a stay at home parent, then this trick will work for you as well! If your method of doing laundry currently leaves you with less quality time with family, or more important things, then this trick will definitely work for you.
Organization is a very important step.
What you want to do is purchase Five Laundry Hamper or baskets for dirty laundry and one for clean. I like to have a size where a full basket equals a full load of laundry for the washing machine. The best basket type for you may be different depending on the layout of your home, load capacity of your machine and the space you have available. My favorite baskets are these here:
Two of the baskets are for the children’s dirty clothes. I also use different colors to help me organize the laundry for washing. One Blue basket is for WARM WASH laundry and one Green basket is for COLD WASH laundry. The Next three baskets are for the rest of the laundry in the house. Again I use colors for organization. One Blue basket for WARM WASH, one Green basket for COLD WASH and one White basket for Whites. The final laundry basket is for clean clothes ready to be folded and put away.
The Front loading washing machine and dryer we own I cannot recommend highly enough. Since it has no agitator in the washing drum I simply can wash everything in there without fear of it needing to be washed delicate and forgetting to change the settings to such. I simply throw it all in, set my desired temperature and with the touch of a button they come out clean every time. With the dryer having a dry sensor feature it simply self-adjusts if the clothes are still a bit damp, or if they don’t need as long as originally estimated. This is the washer and dryer combo I have.
Getting your Laundry Done Quicker than ever
Every morning wash one load of laundry. I wash the fullest one, or the one where an item is needed sooner. Respectively at the same time you will want to transfer any clean laundry from the washing machine to the dryer. If the dryer is full, then it goes into the clean laundry basket. If there is time before the rest of your day starts, fold and put away the laundry. Otherwise, fold and put away the laundry right before going to bed at night.
It takes so little time when it is done this way. I can literally switch my laundry and start a new one in less than 5 minutes. Folding and putting away, if no toddlers are helping, takes at the most 10min. With ultimate folded laundry destruction caused by toddlers while folding said laundry happens it may take me 20min. That’s it. Laundry is done for the day! Whoohoo! Occasionally I will do a second small load of laundry on rare occasions if it is necessary. But with our average sized family, that is rare.
The next day I repeat. Now, if you happen to have a larger family than I do, don’t stress! Simply adjust the loads you do each day. For example, you could start/switch/fold/put away in the AM for 20min, and then repeat in the evening same day. Conquering two loads a day should keep you on track with ease.
Now that you know what to do, go enjoy your freedom!
Once I had come up with this plan and put it into motion for my own family, I have felt so much better about laundry! Now, the occasional pile ups still do happen. Like when super mom gets sick for a few days, then everything in the house gets piled up. You know how it is.
I have a very busy life. I have two littles at home and so this is why I do it first thing in the morning and right before bed. It frees up the rest of my day for things like school, cooking, changing diapers, picking up the house, playing with the kids, kissing boo boos solving toddler challenges and the like. If I wait too long, then I will miss the prime time for the load switch. Our prime time is first thing in the morning and first thing at night. Maybe there is a different prime time for you? For instance maybe you have both kids still napping at the same time….I miss those days!
Now, If you’re looking for a fairy to come in and wave her magic wand to make all your laundry always be done without you having to lift a finger, then I’m sorry I can’t help you there. The only fairies I have found to exist so far are the ones only my 4 year old can see. And according to her all they like to do is turn bright green at night and hide from you if you look at them. Occasionally they will stay and play, but never to do any sort of chores….So far I can’t seem to convince her to ask them to help out here and there….oh well. One can dream!
